The Real Living Wage

What is the ‘Real Living Wage’?

The campaign for a Living Wage was started by Citizens UK in 2001, after discussions highlighted the affect low pay was having within London communities. After years of building support and notoriety across London, the movement went national in 2011 and the National Living Wage Foundation was established.
The foundation set a ‘real’ living wage yearly, taking into consideration what employees actually need to be able to meet the costs of living.

The calculations are split into ‘UK Rate’ and ‘London Rate’ to help balance the increase in cost of living within London, something the ‘National Living Wage’ does not take into account.
“The real Living Wage is the only UK wage rate that is voluntarily paid by over 5,000 UK businesses who believe their staff deserve a fair day’s pay for a hard day’s work.” Living Wage Foundation
